Instigator Jukebox 51 - REM

REM. REM was the sound of a world I did not know. I could listen to their music and be transported to someplace that most definitely was NOT Alief suburbia. I love their output until Automatic For The People, which signaled a change that I did not enjoy, hence my love/hate problem with that album. Everything before that is GOLD JERRY! GOLD! So many amazing fucking songs. Pretty Persuasion is my favorite REM song.

Instigator Jukebox 50 - INDUSTRIAL MUSIC

INDUSTRIAL MUSIC. Between the years of 1991 and 1995 I caught so many industrial bands live. It was fucking great. From Revolting Cocks to Ministry to Nitzer Ebb to Skinny Puppy to My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. I saw all that shit. It was great, all before they turned into Metal acts. These were dark times. This was dark music. Yet, you were expected to DANCE!

Instigator Jukebox 49 - THE POLICE

THE POLICE. I used to hate these guys, mainly because people I knew who owned just 8-10 records and had real shitty taste in music always seemed to own some Police albums, but Claudio got me past that and we all fell for the Police. Aside from some overplayed tunes, their music kicks ass to this day. Sting really fucked things up by breaking them up when they were at the peak of their powers. Stupid shit-smoker.

Instigator Jukebox 47 - TALKING HEADS

TALKING HEADS. I remember hanging out with Heath and having him play me the second side of the first talking heads album, '77, and just falling in love with it's quirky weridness and amazing songs. Talking Heads have always been a thinking person's band, even with their insatiable grooves and beats. You were dancing but if you paid attention to the lyrics you wuold be thinking as well. Great combo. I love all their shit, but the song THE BOOK I READ is my all time fave.

Instigator Jukebox 46 - THRASH METAL

THRASH/SPEED METAL. This is the music that helped us survive middle and high school. I would listen to Megadeth's Peace Sells album over and over and over. I loved the heavy riffage and the lightning fast speeds. Fuck yeah. To this day, the song REIGN IN BLOOD by Slayer is the ultimate asskicker.

Instigator Jukebox 45 - SIGUR ROS

SIGUR ROS. Sometimes you just have to be blown away by the music. This band does that with every song. They write music meant to be absorbed whole. Equally fitting at a funeral and at a birthday party, the true genius lies in Sigur Ros' abilty to evoke a strong response in all listeners. One could have a life-changing epiphany to this music just as well as you could commit suicide. Sigur Ros has it all!

Instigator Jukebox 44 - THE CURE

THE CURE. From the early post-punk riffage of songs like Boys Don't Cry and A Forest to epic guitar freakouts like Fascination Street and The Kiss, the Cure have explored much sonic territory. Sure, they have made me feel sad, and sure, their t-shirts looked great snugly stretching over a pair of high-schoool age breasts, but they rocked like a magik kiss. Their secret weapon was their bass lines! Give it up.

Instigator Jukebox 42 - UNWOUND

UNWOUND. These dudes restored my faith in noise rock. I have loved them all the way through their break-up, and consider myself fortunate to have seen them play live. They were a fucking monster awesome band. Most of their output was recorded as a power trio which, like Shellac, blows my mind, for they are capable of unimaginable walls of skronk. They saved their most beautiful for last, with their double album "Leaves Turn Inside You."

Instigator Jukebox 41 - SHELLAC

SHELLAC. Steve Albini, Todd Trainer, Bob Weston. These three men are here to show the young 'uns how to truly and honestly rock forth in sonic harshness. This music, Shellac's music, makes the supposedly "hard" shit the kids listen to these days sound like watered down Mariah Carey Rhythm and Bullshit. I was lucky enough to see them perform here in Houston, for Shellac perform live rarely and haphazardly. We were very very lucky. FUCK, THEY RULE!

SLICK RICK. Unmistakable vocal delivery. Incredibly precise and innovative rhyme schemes. Storytelling to the extreme. Slick Rick always surprises and dazzles the ears. He changes his delivery and rhythm more often in one song than most current rappers do in whole albums. The grand wizard MC Ricky D in the place to be. The first two are from his rhymes with Doug E. Fresh.

Instigator Jukebox 38 - BLACK SABBATH

BLACK SABBATH. There was not a band more loved by myself and all other outcast misfits than Black Sabbath. I remember metal-heads, punks, jocks, rockers, etc. all loving themselves some Sabbath, especially my friends from foreign nations. I had a friend named Irfan who loved Sabbath and Ozzy and we would listen to Sabbath and Ozzy through my headphones at lunch. Every heavy band owes Sabbath for their existance. Oh, and FUCK Ronnie James Dio, goddamn midget fuck. I like my Sabbath original and uncut, not some watered-down, stepped-on version full of dragons and grimoires and incantations.

Instigator Jukebox 37 - CURTIS MAYFIELD

CURTIS MAYFIELD. I first began my obsession with Curtis Mayfield's music about 12 years ago, and it has never let up. The man was a musical funk/soul genius, and that's no lie. he sang from the heart and from the mind. He was paralyzed on stage in a freak accident when a piece of lighting scaffolding crashed down upon him. He died a few years later. Curtis' guitar work is severly under-appreciated and his music fills me with hope. Can't fucking beat that. Soul, Funk, Rock...

Instigator Jukebox 36 - HOUSTON BANDS

HOUSTON BANDS. Having gone to shows in Houston Texas since I was a teen ( a loooooong time ago), I've seen many many local acts of varying quality. Most had the Houston dirge noise thing kickin', which is wonderful. There are many more though that do not carry this "typical" Houston sludge. Here is a colection of some of my favorites from back before my time to the present.

Instigator Jukebox 35 - VAN HALEN

VAN HALEN. These guys were always labeled as a party band but that was only because their music made you feel so fucking good! Their riffs were too FAT and HEAVY for a party band! Shit yeah. I remember mowing the lawn on Saturdays with my Walkman blasting 1984 into my ears. To this day no guitarist has come up with anything comparable to Eddie van Halen's flying fingertapping and fabulous riffs. So many other bands from that time left behind forgetable music and albums no one cares about anymore, but Van Halen endures. FUCKING RAWK! (BTW, I in no way will include fucking VAN HAGAR in this jukebox)

MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Do you like noise? Do you like washes of skronk and skree? Do you love walls of sound and nearly incomprehensible ghost-like vocals? Do you like when tapes are manipulated and re-tracked over and over and over until all you can hear is the hiss of Beelzebub? I sure as fuck do! My Bloody Valentine give you all that in spades!
