Morphine was a fantastic band. They labeled themselves as "low-rock" which is a fitting moniker for their music. Mark Sandman, bassist and singer, died after collapsig on a European stage. I first fell in love with their album Cure For Pain, which took repetaed listens to fully grasp. I had never heard anything that sounded like them. Drums, slide bass, and saxophones (sometimes played two-at-a-time a la Roland Kirk) and Sandman's deep voice, all added up to the definitive "low-rock" experience.
